Compositions by artificial intelligence: How good is it?

Artificial intelligence
is progressing at a fast rate. We experience it every day all around us. From the mobile phones we use to the cars we drive. All these things now have the ability to perform sophisticated functions without needing much human effort.

AI is used by large corporations such as Amazon to help you shop, but sometimes it’s fun to be able to do things yourself. Let’s assume you need new towels for your bathroom and are on the hunt for a bargain. You can go the traditional route of looking for coupons in newspapers but there is another way.  Online catalogues such as spotlight specials offer a good alternative to browse around for items at a discount. The experience of looking for that bargain might be enjoyable to you because you have full control of where to look and what to look for.

Similar to people enjoying an entire shopping experience, it can be the same with music composition. AI can compose good music and although it can undoubtedly make life easier by doing the hard work, certain composers like to have full control of the whole creative process. Some composers want to put their heart and soul into it.

If having full control of the composing process is not of great importance to the composer, AI can be a fantastic tool that increases the quality of music production and output. Now more than ever, artificial intelligence is being used to aid producers in composing music.

Traditionally, music composers write and direct original music used to produce various types of media entertainment. The goal for music composers is to create scores that evoke a certain mood or emotion to a particular scene in a play, film or other production. AI has immensely changed how this is achieved.

AI makes the process quicker and easier through the use of various software programs of differing capabilities. The programs are fed huge amounts of information. This info is used to find particular patterns that will help the composer to create a particular piece of music.

Amper is an example of a music making AI platform. It produces tracks from pre-recorded audio. All composers have to do is go to a website, pick a genre and a mood they want to work with. The software produces audio output the composers can then tweak to as they see fit.

Platforms like IBM Watson Beat and Google Magenta help composers generate melodies, percussion and chords. Instead of being seen as something that could compete with human efforts in the future, AI in music composition could be seen as an aid to artists. It is good enough to produce pieces of music that an artist can that a composer can then master to perfection.

How good are AI compositions? AI has become quite advanced when it comes to music compositions. The question that remains is if it produces music that will reach the top of the charts or deserving of an award.  Because of the fast progression of AI, it is highly possible that one day it may very well produce music of a quality that can be compared to that created by a human composer.

Humans will always be needed to compose quality music and AI is now there to make the process and experience quicker and easier than ever before.
